CNET's Apple event live blog (Wednesday, September 12)

This event has concluded. Apple has officially announced the iPhone 5.

  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:20:02 PM
Lightning connector plugs in on the bottom left side.

    30 hours of music playback.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:20:09 PM
    No Web browser, or Wi-Fi.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:20:11 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:20:20 PM
    New iPod Touch.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:20:42 PM
Joswiak talking up 175,000 games and apps that work on the iPod Touch.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:20:43 PM
That's the Nano. Back to form, but revamped. It needs to stay in that rectangular size.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:21:03 PM
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:21:13 PM
iPod Touch has a longer screen, too.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:21:19 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:21:36 PM
5th generation model -- looks a whole lot like the old one from the front, except with the larger screen found on the iPhone 5. 6.1 mm thick, 88 grams. Thinnest and lightest iPod touch yet, Joswiak says.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:21:40 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:21:49 PM
Back is aluminum but not glossy.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:21:54 PM
The back's no longer shiny! More of a brushed metal feel.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:21:57 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:22:04 PM
Headphone jack is on the bottom left, also uses the new lightning connector.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:22:25 PM
So, both the Touch and iPhone 5 will have the extra-long 4-inch screen. App-makers, you've gotten the message loud and clear.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:22:25 PM
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:22:43 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:22:53 PM
New iPod Touch uses the A5 chip.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:23:16 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:23:20 PM
Not as fast as the iPhone 5's A6, but still a dual-core chip, which Joswiak says is 7x faster than the previous model when it comes to graphics.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:23:38 PM
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:23:48 PM
But, has an A5. So, Touch and iPhone 5 now have A5 and A6, respectively. Maybe this will settle into the pattern for iPhone and Touch.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:23:57 PM
We're getting a demo of "Clumsy Ninja" a 3D game.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:24:14 PM
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:24:32 PM
Clumsy Ninja being demoed. Toy time! Like a flexible marionette.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:24:51 PM
Demo shows you being able to control the ninja by grabbing his appendages and moving him around. All these calculations are being done in real-time by the processor.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:24:58 PM
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:24:59 PM
Tickling a ninja. This is happening.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:25:11 PM
You can even tickle the ninja, who then hides -- clumsily.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:25:47 PM
I'd say this isn't something we've never seen before. More of a chance to demo the graphics/screen size on the new Touch.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:26:09 PM
Demo breaking out punching bags, trampolines. The entire game is about building up your ninja's skills.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:26:10 PM
    Now, ninja-on-a-trampoline.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:26:39 PM
A project of Natural Motion, company says it used to require a supercomputer and now works on an iPod Touch. App/Game is coming this holiday, the company says.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:26:58 PM
Joswiak back talking battery life. Gets 40 hours of music, 8 hours of video.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:27:11 PM
Eight hours of video: better for the tykes on road trips.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:27:25 PM
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:27:47 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:27:50 PM
Camera on the back has a mic, flash. 5 megapixel w/backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, w/autofocus, and Sapphire crystal.
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:28:18 PM
So kind of a mix between the camera on the iPhone 4, 4S and now the 5. A Franken-camera if you will.
  • James Martin 9/12/2012 6:28:29 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 9/12/2012 6:28:43 PM
Also includes the new panorama mode. New device runs iPhoto for iOS.
  • Scott Stein 9/12/2012 6:28:47 PM
5 instead of 8 megapixel, but same lens construction. And Panorama. The Touch is a franken-portable all around.
