CNET's Apple event live blog (Wednesday, September 12)

This event has concluded. Apple has officially announced the iPhone 5.

  • cossi 9/12/2012 7:41:32 PM
I feel like this is a very important moment in the smartphone market time line. Not that apple is gonna lose a lot or any of their market share control after this event. But I do think that a few people are gonna try a new OS. I think it's a great time to switch to Android or Windows Phone 8.
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:41:59 PM
@cossi Totally agree. Really seems like you have multiple serious options now.
  • 007 9/12/2012 7:42:05 PM
    samsung will celebrating this christmas
  • Phillip 9/12/2012 7:42:12 PM
Does that mean there is no NFC(Near field communication)?
  • S3vsIP5 9/12/2012 7:42:21 PM
    Siri vs S_Voice verdict?
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:42:32 PM
Apple announced no NFC in the new iPhone
  • David Hamilton 9/12/2012 7:43:05 PM
    @Phillip No NFC announcement today.
  • ROM_Ulan 9/12/2012 7:43:19 PM
No NFC is a shame. It's very useful. I love android beam.
  • Calineil 9/12/2012 7:43:21 PM
Ok, now I've read the new specs and seen the new pics BUT it still doesn't sing out "BUY ME !" Sorry Apple but you could have done a LOT better in the cosmetics department and there may be a new iOs and all the other extras with the iPhone 5 but I'm gonna wait to get hands-on before even really considering getting this new one, it's exactly like the 4 and 4S only a little longer and thinner. Come on Apple get with the newer looks would you please ? Rather disappointed really.
  • Charlotte Dohn 9/12/2012 7:43:27 PM
I'm very disappointed. Was hoping to be wowed but there is nothing about the iPhone 5 that seems really great-even the screen size. I feel like there was more time spent on the itouch and nano, and the nano is just ugly!
  • ROM_Ulan 9/12/2012 7:43:38 PM
I'm an android fan. But I was really hoping to see apple produce something amazing today. I really feel like apple is falling behind. They need to get their butts in gear and start innovating!
  • AKPete 9/12/2012 7:44:20 PM
Now would have been a good time to introduce two versions of the iPhone 5 --one with a bigger battery. If they wait to do that in a year, it will look like catch-up ball rather than innovation...
  • TorpeAlex 9/12/2012 7:44:51 PM
@David Hamilton Which is a darned shame. They could have worked some intuitive features into a NFC iPhone, especially with the new Passbook feature.
  • Phillip 9/12/2012 7:45:50 PM
So then whats the one killer feature that sets this apart from everything else? because right now I see nothing...
  • Airsofter76 9/12/2012 7:46:13 PM
@AKPete Even if they did it now it would seem like cacth-up
  • Natty 9/12/2012 7:46:21 PM
After waiting this long, I am definitely getting the iPhone 5.
  • @mikevhl 9/12/2012 7:46:26 PM
Anyone agrees that the implementation of the 4 inch screen is pretty bad? For most apps it will be fine, but imagine games like Modern Combat 3, the controls will be unreachable because there is a lot of 'black area' before the actual controls when holding the device in landscape mode.
  • Dan Murphy 9/12/2012 7:46:30 PM
HAVING >100 apps is different than USING >100 apps
  • ROM_Ulan 9/12/2012 7:46:37 PM
@TorpeAlex You could use coupons and pay for things you purchase at the same time. Even redeem loyalty cards. Would be awesome!
  • Andrew 9/12/2012 7:46:41 PM
So how much is the 4S now?
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:46:53 PM
4S is now $99 with contract
  • prash 9/12/2012 7:47:02 PM
Very unimpressive... they gave what people expected of them, nothing more. Didn't change the design much, bigger screen but still lacking behind the best androids, no real improvement on battery life, and because of the new screen and aspect ration, everything is gonna have black bars on the tops and sides. Not saying it's a bad phone, its just not what I expected and I will be sticking with android for at least a few more years.
  • nrevelle 9/12/2012 7:47:32 PM
Dallas stores now have no iMacs in stock. Any news on why?
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:48:31 PM
There was a rumor that iMac would be updated after this event. Could still be an update on the way, but right now Apple's store is back up and there's no "new" tag on the Macs, as is common with an update. Current specs are same as before also.
  • Georges 9/12/2012 7:48:37 PM
@prash Most developers will have their apps fixed by the time everything's available, so there will be no black bars.
  • David Hamilton 9/12/2012 7:49:42 PM
Wow. I missed the fact that the Lightning adapter costs $29
  • Stan 9/12/2012 7:49:53 PM
Will the screen use Gorilla Glass.
  • Billy 9/12/2012 7:50:15 PM
Okay so experts please tell me why apple has failed to impress us in a two straight announcements ?
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:50:21 PM
I don't believe Apple mentioned Gorilla Glass during the presentation, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
  • elby77 9/12/2012 7:50:56 PM
Any word on theniPad mini--when it will be available, cost?
  • David Hamilton 9/12/2012 7:50:59 PM
@elby77 No news on an iPad Mini today. Rumor has it Apple may have a separate event in the next month or so.
  • Myninjaninja 9/12/2012 7:51:06 PM
People battery life is better, to be able to run LTE for 8 hours is a big improvement than any other phone out there. The iPhone is amazing and it will wow people, just hold the comments till you play with one. Hold them till you can actually use the device
  • prash 9/12/2012 7:51:14 PM
@Philip exactly there is no killer feature. They just made a phone that competes, nothing better than what's out there. I don't se why anyone would take this over an s3 or razr or HTC one or even some of the higher end xperias and lgs
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:51:20 PM
@Billy Maybe it's you who's changed? Seriously, it might be because Apple's competition has gotten better.
  • ScottS 9/12/2012 7:51:49 PM
Not an expert, but a missing Steve Jobs may have something to do with it.
  • UphoneDamnRight 9/12/2012 7:51:58 PM
Does anyone know if AT&T is going to make people who upgrade ditch their unlimited data plan?
  • Murzeek 9/12/2012 7:52:36 PM
Can I ask for 1 clarification? iOS6, including the new maps will be available for iphone 4... but they said that maps works with Siri. Does this mean that if you have a 4, you will not be able to get audible turn-by-turn directions?
  • prash 9/12/2012 7:52:42 PM
@Georges then why did Tim cook mention the black bars during the presentation? 16:9 = black bars just like in movies
  • Maxxie 9/12/2012 7:53:52 PM
There was no wow factor for me this time :( they should of left iPhone 4s out of market kept all the ideas such as Siri for iPhone 5 at least then iPhone 5 would of been something special
  • @mikevhl 9/12/2012 7:53:57 PM
@Murzeek what they mean is that the voice of Siri tells you the directions. Best bet is to download the iOS6 Beta 4 and try! Message me on twitter if you are not a developer.
  • Myninjaninja 9/12/2012 7:54:17 PM
Apple has been so far ahead I must admit that the other companies have caught up just a bit. That said anyone can get to where Apple is by copying them. Give it time Apple will come out with something amazing! Mark my words
  • Natty 9/12/2012 7:54:29 PM
@prash Not everyone likes the operating system of Android..
  • Calineil 9/12/2012 7:54:40 PM
And the best part is it's already on their website with all the specs...
  • Patrick 9/12/2012 7:55:00 PM
the Lightning adapter costs $29!! Not cheap! At least, at this price, they could give two adapters.
  • Georges 9/12/2012 7:55:19 PM
@prash Oh I thought you meant in Apps. Apps won't have that; just movies like on TV :)
  • Monstertruck 9/12/2012 7:55:40 PM
I think they've created something that will attract many of those who have never owned an iPhone. Although you can't always get everyone to upgrade, you can wrangle new customers into the iPhone family.
  • RambleiPhone 9/12/2012 7:56:24 PM
@ScottS That's a fact that nobody wants to recognize, but it's there altogether. The fact that Steve is not anymore, reflects directly on the products, I mean come on, both iPods would have never gotten passed Steve's drawing board. Take for example the latest "new" interface for the Apple TV, that design was in Steve's "failed design" archive, now look at it. Fellows, today... today apple dies. Big fan BTW
  • FlutterGuy 9/12/2012 7:56:34 PM
I told Justin on the 404 not to trust the internet. He didn't listen to me and won :(
  • Natty 9/12/2012 7:57:10 PM
I am thinking that Apple might lose a lot of old IPhone fans and owners because of the change in the charger..
  • ThatGuy 9/12/2012 7:57:30 PM
@Patrick Even at $5 that adapter is not going anywhere in my house. It's just too fragile looking for my current accessories.
  • testtesting 9/12/2012 7:57:40 PM
Universal strap? Why not use the port for a low profile locking strap, more extra sales for 3rd parts
  • Rich Brown 9/12/2012 7:58:44 PM
Folks, we'll be closing this out in about two minutes. Thank you again for hanging out with us.
  • David Hamilton 9/12/2012 7:59:06 PM
@Uphone Apple didn't say anything about AT&T data plans. We covered AT&T's changes back in July, so check it out.
  • @mikevhl 9/12/2012 7:59:50 PM
@natty I agree, I just bought an iPad 3, hoping to buy the new iPhone and be able to have a charger downstairs and upstairs. Now I'll have to carry both chargers around with me all the time, or pay an additional 29 dollars, and since I live in Europe and they don't change the currency, it'll cost 37 dollars here!
  • Billy 9/12/2012 7:59:52 PM
@RichBrown Well i think it's the whole audience has changed .. we all need something impressive isn't it ? I think at the end of the day people will buy this one no matter how they complain about it because it's the "new iphone"
  • Leslie W 9/12/2012 7:59:58 PM
how about an adapter for the adapter ? i have a SONY radio/charger that also plays my iphone music... if i upgrade, it's useless ;-(
  • David Hamilton 9/12/2012 8:01:51 PM
