Facebook holds press event to show off its next big thing

Facebook is holding a media event at its headquarter in Menlo Park, Calif. We'll be bringing you all the news.

  • Ana 1/15/2013 5:54:39 PM
I hope it will enable marketers to do more with business pages...
  • Peter Frazier 1/15/2013 5:55:16 PM
@Nader Houella good point.. i've never used the video comm's.. hangouts are the best so far.. use it with family all the time
  • Nilesh,India 1/15/2013 5:55:57 PM
I guess there more focus will be on advertisers and investors..enough users now.. :)
  • Robert 1/15/2013 5:56:19 PM
I guess it'll be an extension to "Nearby", there is huge potential in it...
  • kmullett 1/15/2013 5:56:34 PM
@Vikas 'paid' services are certainly inline with others that they have announced recently, but they didn't do any fanfare for them.
  • Nader Houella 1/15/2013 5:56:36 PM
I mean think about it: facebook has enhanced all sorts of text-based and image-based interactions...what's left? VIDEO!
  • Jake Stainer 1/15/2013 5:57:32 PM
I'm thinking it will be the search engine they are planning captilising on their content and bringing in their ads on the search results... more money and people will actually be looking for a product etc..
  • thomas 1/15/2013 5:57:38 PM
@Nader Houella video is done with the integration of skype
  • angeloandom1 1/15/2013 5:57:40 PM
ii would want.maybe more customization, more feautures on timeline movie maker,on mobile apps and video calling.well i expected on a website redesign, which maybe i dont want to see.
  • lexjah 1/15/2013 5:57:48 PM
could it be a browser as well? like chrome?
  • Tsiuqlhaw Regrot 1/15/2013 5:57:59 PM
@ Nader - a video with 3+ participants on facebook would be awesome, but it takes too much bandwidth, and i don't think they can pull it off without developing something similar to Skype..
  • Swiss journalist 1/15/2013 5:58:08 PM
Who is the journalist in the press conference?!? What's his / her name? ... said otherwise: on which user should I focus my attention? Thanks !
  • Julian Lycett 1/15/2013 5:58:56 PM
It`s always about connections, today messenger goes, skype is a heavily intergrated beast, bing runs searches and maps then with the new possibilities of windows 8 and the phones and consoles and and and .... (alongside the adverts on this very page point to one thing).
  • Peter Frazier 1/15/2013 5:58:58 PM
i'd even be happy with intelligent checkin's.. ability to set auto checkin to places it is recognizing you frequent often.. and more importantly YOUR comfortable with posting.. wouldn't hurt to have some very simple control on who gets the check in..
  • James Martin 1/15/2013 5:59:05 PM
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 5:59:24 PM
Standing room only , though unsure how many of those are FB employees
  • atomni 1/15/2013 5:59:24 PM
i could see it being a browser. i wouldn't like it but i can see them wanting to get in on something like that
  • NKB 1/15/2013 5:59:27 PM
It's all about THEM making money. It has nothing to do with the users.
  • Jay C 1/15/2013 5:59:31 PM
Why does this blog allow user comments? This is crazy. Mute All and lets just hear from the people in the room.
  • David Hamilton 1/15/2013 5:59:43 PM
@Jay C, that's exactly what we'll do once things get rolling.
  • angeloandom1 1/15/2013 5:59:52 PM
also i want something like a photo editor on photos, better control when i adjust the cover and maybe some desktop apps.also i ould want something like filters in instagram.
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:00:34 PM
Meantime, employees gotta be please that Facebook's stock is up almost 1% on a down day in market. And at $31.25, it's edging back towards IPO price of $38.
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:00:59 PM
Correct, there is no live stream.
  • gp360 1/15/2013 6:01:23 PM
@NKB I disagree. Facebook was built on it's users, and most likely realizes that their success is due to providing a quality free service to it's users, and not focusing so much on advertising
  • Bob Jones 1/15/2013 6:02:21 PM
Anybody else thinking Zuckerberg is going to announce that construction on his private island is complete and that he is handing the company over to the shareholders?
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:02:25 PM
If this is a phone, Zuckerberg will be following one of his mentors -- Steve Jobs -- in saying one thing and doing another.
  • James Martin 1/15/2013 6:02:30 PM
  • etc-magazine.com 1/15/2013 6:02:33 PM
well, i am quite excited on what is going to happen. I recently read an article about an web-expert critizising the bad programming-quality of facebook calling it "a mess of code". So maybe we have to expect a step-by-step rework of facebook (re-design)?
  • Julian Lycett 1/15/2013 6:03:00 PM
@paul waiting to see a spike on this announcement myself, thats my prediction
  • Mika 1/15/2013 6:03:20 PM
Is David Hamilton in the Room?
  • AManduh 1/15/2013 6:03:27 PM
Facebook is LAME - No live feed after all this attention to the LIVE Press Event? Maybe they couldnt handle it!
  • DouglasCrets 1/15/2013 6:03:35 PM
I doubt that FB employees pay attention to daily or hourly fluctuations in stock price. That's what news people do.
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:03:39 PM
COO Sheryl Sandberg is in the house
  • James Martin 1/15/2013 6:03:53 PM
  • David Hamilton 1/15/2013 6:03:58 PM
@Mika Nope. But Paul and our photographer James Martin are.
  • Luke Sandoval 1/15/2013 6:04:16 PM
If it's a phone people will not buy it. No one needs a phone for a specific service. Since Facebook is buggy as it is could you even imagine a phone?!?
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:04:23 PM
    Zuckerberg is on the stage
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:04:35 PM
Says the first big product announcement at new campus
  • David Hamilton 1/15/2013 6:04:51 PM
OK, we're muting comments now. We'll reopen after the event.
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:04:51 PM
Reiterates mission of making teh world a more connected place
  • James Martin 1/15/2013 6:05:32 PM
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:05:33 PM
He's talking about giving people the tools for the social graph. Some tools help you stay connected; others help you make new connections. Most people think of FB as the former--helping you stay connected with people you already know
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:05:52 PM
Today, he says, going to discuss a service that helps users make new connections.
  • Paul Sloan 1/15/2013 6:06:46 PM
Like any database, you should be able to query it. There are a few major use cases ....the first -- they want to know in the world, w/ the people around them. That's news feed. Another common query : who is this person? Tell me about them. That's timeline.
