Microsoft unveils a new version of Office.

  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:50:33 PM
And rounding out the social features: the Yammer integration, activity feed in SharePoint, the People Cards across apps, and built-in Skype.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:50:57 PM
And finally, features like annotation, reading modes in Word, and the meetings feature that use Lync and Skype.
  • Jason Parker 7/16/2012 7:51:17 PM
It kind of seems like the short schedule is coming up against them...we only had time for "a smidge," but there's a lot more to the new Office.
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:51:29 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:51:42 PM
Ballmer says a handful of people have already been using the new software preview a part of a trial and enjoying it.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:52:20 PM
That includes Mike Riess, a Baylor University as well as "Super Mom" Susan Driever who calls SkyDrive "a life saver."
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:52:38 PM
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:53:27 PM

    Super Mom!

  • Jason Parker 7/16/2012 7:53:33 PM
Trying to make it personal here....big pictures of people with their quotes for how the modern Office helps them.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:53:56 PM
Finally, there's Mike Kaminsky, a brand manager who says that Office lets him work "as if I were in my office" while travelling.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:54:51 PM
Ballmer says the company has "a lot of work to get the cost down" on the Perceptive Pixel displays, but that it's the next big step in presenting.
  • Jason Parker 7/16/2012 7:55:23 PM
Ballmer just called it Office 15...the internal codename. What is this thing called? We went with The New Microsoft Office (Office 2013), but it would be nice if MS could decide what to call it.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:55:39 PM
Okay, last link: office.com/preview lets you get in early.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:56:20 PM
Ballmer says the company is pushing people to try Microsoft Office 365 (the subscription) first, but that the company will still be offering a fully licensed version you can install and forget about.
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:56:45 PM
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:57:07 PM
Ballmer wrapping up. Says it "feels a lot like 1995" because the company has an exciting new version of Windows on the way, along with a new version of Office coming too. "Together I think they're quite magical," he says.
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:57:39 PM
  • Jason Parker 7/16/2012 7:57:42 PM
    "Magical." No comment.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:57:44 PM
Ballmer says that with the upcoming Surface, and devices from other manufacturers it goes "beyond magical."
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:58:04 PM
"This shapes up to the most exciting, fun, productive year that any of us has had in a long time."
  • David Hamilton 7/16/2012 7:58:08 PM
Not really sure Ballmer should be saying that it feels like 1995.
  • Josh Lowensohn 7/16/2012 7:58:18 PM
    And that's a wrap.
  • CNETfan 7/16/2012 7:58:31 PM
some of this, such as 'peeks' and documents in the cloud are sort of like apple's popovers and iCloud service
  • Paul 7/16/2012 7:58:36 PM
It would be nice if they brought back that cartoon paper clip to welcome you back. ;)
  • Jason Parker 7/16/2012 7:58:39 PM
    Thanks everybody!
  • rolllimp 7/16/2012 7:58:40 PM
dont mind my comment here.. but i think apple can sue microsoft over office 365... lol... i dont see any difference between this and iWork's, so far atleast.
  • Golinvox 7/16/2012 7:58:51 PM
As someone who works in a large office, this social network in office thing seems so pointless...
  • matty 7/16/2012 7:58:57 PM
I'm not being funny, but most of this seems easy enough to do with no ground-breaking features. That big telly looks good though :)
  • heroorgoat 7/16/2012 7:59:07 PM
Steve Ballmer is a chucklehead. He needs to retire quickly.
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 7:59:11 PM
  • Adam P 7/16/2012 7:59:25 PM
When will the Windows 8 tablet be available?

  • Kent German 7/16/2012 8:00:09 PM
@Adam: Later this year. We still need the official release of Windows 8, which could come next month.
  • James Martin 7/16/2012 8:00:42 PM
  • Curtis 7/16/2012 8:01:58 PM
Really cool design and features on tablets (Surface), but what will it cost? that will depend on if I'll still use Google docs
  • bogascorp 7/16/2012 8:02:14 PM
I'm trying to get office but the site is not working properlly
  • Mack LaMastus 7/16/2012 8:02:56 PM
That was almost painful to watch. They need to work on presentation.
  • Kent German 7/16/2012 8:03:00 PM
