Nokia's Windows Phone press conference

As Nokia World unfolds in Finland, Nokia joins with Microsoft to unveil new Windows Phone devices in New York.

  • Welcome, everyone!
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • This is going to be an exciting day for phones. We've got the Nokia/Microsoft press event now, followed by the Motorola/Verizon launch just after.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • Never been so excited about a launch event ever. Hope Nokia surprises with some excellent announcements. I've sold my Galaxy S2 in anticipation of one of these!!

  • Here we are at Microsoft and Nokia's big morning jam!
    by Brian Bennett
  • Kent, Roger, and Brian are getting seated and settled. Brian, what's the scene like there?
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • We're live at Nokia. What would you like to see?
    by Kent German
  • Lots of folks here despite the rain too!
    by Brian Bennett
  • I get the feeling this will be a big news event. There's a vibe in the air man.
    by Brian Bennett
  • Is this event all about Nokia and Microsoft? or there would be some extra like for Symbian :)
    by Ion
  • Lots of blue. blue, blue...Nokia blue.
    by Brian Bennett
  • @Ion Yep, this is all about Microsoft and Windows Phone for Nokia.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • Also there are two giant white phone lights at each corner of the stage!
    by Brian Bennett
  • Or should I say giant phones that have lights inside...what could they be?
    by Brian Bennett
  • It's getting hot, sweaty, and crowded in here....and the club music fits right in.
    by Brian Bennett
  • Yep, people are fighting for seats all around me.
    by Brian Bennett
  • There have been plenty of leaks leading up to this event:

  • Windows Phone 8-based Lumia 920, 820 leak onto the Web: news.cnet.com
    by john.falcone
  • @Brian Bennett Whip out that camera and take a photo!

  • New Nokia Lumia 920, 820 to feature wireless charging: news.cnet.com
    by john.falcone
  • I hope the rumor for the wireless charging pad was true cause if so wouldn't that be a first?
    by hockeyduck3
  • @hockeyduck3 Sort of, not really. Some BlackBerrys have built-in support for Qi inductive charging, which doesn't work that well in my experience. But then again, I never tried it on a BlackBerry.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • I believe that the Palm Pre had a wireless, inductive charger
    by john.falcone
  • So is this really a crucial moment for Nokia? Some media is reporting that if they fail to amaze, it's end of the story.
    by mikkop71
  • I'm getting bored with my 4S and since the supposed size of the 5 isn't much larger, I'm looking hard at what will be revealed here today
    by jaktech
  • Yeah, Roger Cheng just arrived!
    by Brian Bennett
  • @mikkop71: Roger Cheng, who's on-site, agrees. Nokia again faces make-or-break point with new Lumia phones: news.cnet.com
    by john.falcone
  • Hey! I slogged through the rain and humidity of Manhattan to get to this event. It better be worth it.
    by Roger Cheng
  • @mikkop71 It won't be the end of the story, but it'll make the story that much harder. Nokia must have had some ideas in the hopper from a long time back. This is their chance to put lab ideas into action.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • For those who are asking: photos should begin flowing in soon, but the real event won't be starting until 10am ET / 7am PT

  • You can also click on the link above for a live video stream
    by john.falcone
  • The Nokia event is bathed in blue light, with large blue signage on stage. That's funny considering the leaked shots we've seen show yellow and red Lumia phones.

  • What Nokia and Microsoft need to do is make the media store stuff fun to use I think.
    by Brian Bennett
  • You can expect colors to be a big point of focus for Nokia. The blue version of the Lumia 900 for AT&T actually outsold the black one, so the carriers will likely take a more serious look at colors beyond the boring black and white iterations.
    by Roger Cheng
  • All this blue lighting is make me feel really chill....in an excited kind of way!
    by Brian Bennett
  • One thing I'd definitely mention is not to expect a 41-megapixel camera. A Nokia exec let us down not-too-gently yesterday.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • Boy I'm excited!! Can't wait to hear about some unannounced WP8 features
    by Balthasar Schweizer
  • @Roger Cheng The Lumia 900/800 have taught us to count on Nokia for pops of color, as well as basic black.
    by Jessica Dolcourt
  • @mikkop71 They've shown some signs of fragmentation. For example, the pureview coming out that wasn't on a WP device. That tells me they have contingency plans but would probably be a lot happier and calmer if some folks would latch onto the latest, greatest WP devices.

  • Hi folks, Wi-Fi inside the event is a bit spotty. We'll have more photos!
    by Kent German
  • @AJ: Roger, Brian and I are at the event. Sarah Tew will have photos. Jessica and John are hosting our live blog from SF and NY respectively.

  • Looks like the video stream is attempting to flicker to life
    by john.falcone
  • To set the stage: the weather here in NY today is... rather disgusting. Overcast, hot, and extremely humid. Just had a quick downpour about 30 minutes ago.
    by john.falcone
  • Uh oh. Kent has his *serious* face on...
