Apple suffers from the 80/20 rule. 80% of time spent on new product secrecy and 20% on innovation. Apple drips out innovation hoping it satisfies its loyal customers. Competitors push out more innovations and have passed Apple in the process. Pretty simple business case study.

My brother in law ran over the S3 with his car......twice! And it was still fine.

Re: number of CPU cores -- last year's Galaxy S3 had quad core internationally, but dual core in the US (to accomodate the 4G LTE chip).
  • Paul Sloan 3/14/2013 10:13:00 PM
    @JBeebz I want a video of that!

CNETers are lining up: That's the inimitable Roger Cheng checking out his smartphone (of unknown provenance) along with Jessica Dolcourt.

The Samsung phones do feel cheap, but could be rectified by doing what HTC did with the 8x. The rubbery feel of the 8x really is nice, so the Samsung's have some ground to make up in overall feel (IMO).
  • Arun Agrawal 3/14/2013 10:14:58 PM
I think we could also get a new galaxy tablet with similar tech (as in S4)
  • Paul Sloan 3/14/2013 10:15:06 PM
Good to see CNET's Roger Cheng and Jessica Dolcourt. Getting ready go head in.

Samsung has a tremendous to not only steal Apples thunder but leapfrog ahead of them in device relevance with some tactical improvements.
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:15:42 PM
    FYI, it's about 39 degrees F / 4 degrees C here in NYC today.
  • Ali 3/14/2013 10:16:01 PM
@JBeebz was it a toy car?

  • Joel Lui 3/14/2013 10:16:58 PM
How will you guys think it will compare to the HTC ONE
  • ipodu 3/14/2013 10:17:08 PM
love you CNET!!! they keep making phone screen bigger and bigger, but i don't wanna hold a brick in my hand. plus the battery life is key. i had an S3 switched to an iphone. love my iphone. S3 screen cracked on mine on first drop whereas i've dropped my iphone 3 times and not even a scratch. but apple needs to step it up.
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:17:24 PM
Great question re: HTC One. That's going to be the major Android competitor to the GS4, at least for now.
  • Vision12013 3/14/2013 10:17:27 PM
Samsung has an opportunity to not only steal Apples thunder, but leapfrog ahead of them in the device category if they improve a few basic functions

I think its great that phones are getting more powerful cpu and gpu wise. Problem is most apps in google play only support single core. there is only so much you can you can do with muti cores. the app makers need to start improving apps to utilize muti cores. i own a nexus 4 but i love the samsung line.
  • JY 3/14/2013 10:18:52 PM
I think they will have wireless charging if they don't join now they'll miss the opportunity but they want to make money so you might have to buy it seperatly
  • wilfred_com 3/14/2013 10:19:05 PM
About battery life, in my S3 i used the modified ROMs Omega and Energy HD, they have a wonderful use of the battery permiting all day (11 hours) of autonomy.
So if a modifed ROM can brind better battery life isn't to hard to imagine that Samsung can do a better work at software level.
  • Master G 3/14/2013 10:19:23 PM
I think it will have a better camera. the 4 MP thing was a nice way to say hey we are trying a new approach very much like apple. To tell you the truth my GS3 takes better photos than my wifes iPhone 5
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:19:28 PM
The leaks seem to verify the earlier scoop from our own Roger Cheng that the GS4 will retain a plastic body: Why the Galaxy S4 won't be shedding its plastic roots

As a reminder, the actual press conference will start in 40 minutes. But enjoy hanging out with us here in the meantime.

My wide and I are both getting this phone. I'm pumped for the event.
  • aaron.solen 3/14/2013 10:22:49 PM
Im excited to see what they bring to the table. I have a hard time believing they will outshine the HTC one in style though. We will see if they outshine it in software/hardware.
  • madmacs 3/14/2013 10:22:51 PM
Can't imagine the rumours are true that the S4 mini is also soon to be released. The S3 mini seems to be selling well. Although I'd love a phone that size with the specs of its bigger brother. Not a fan of larger phones.
  • tallpinoy 3/14/2013 10:23:21 PM
S4 vs. HTC One. Hopefully the S4 can benchmark like the HTC one. A score of 12,000 is amazing! Downside of HTC One is non removable battery and no micro sd slot. That's a deal breaker for me.
  • Vision12013 3/14/2013 10:23:44 PM
Camera improvements should include lower noise, higher ISO performance. Battery life improvements [slightly thicker by 1.5mm would make space for an enormous energy capacity upgrade]. Not leave the business/professional/working class behind by creating a 5.0" screen which is not productive in many situations. Opting to release a full-core version to the US market [EG if the 8-core is true, have it native here as well] team with Blackberry to develop an android capable BBerry connect e'mail program which works on packet data; Blackberry may have fallen behind in the device market but it is an e'mail machine and for those who communicate corporately this is key. Predictive text typing choices that makes sense such as a 20 key digital keyboard option. IE 2 letters per key if the user so chooses...
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:23:48 PM
The S3 Mini isn't just a smaller version of the S3; it's more of a step-down phone for the larger world market. Whether we get an S4 Mini today is anyone's guess.
  • PhotoMan831 3/14/2013 10:24:03 PM
When is the S4 actually being released??
  • JY 3/14/2013 10:24:09 PM
Has to beat: IPhone 5, HTC One, Sony Experia Z, Nexus 4, Lumia 920, and obviously the s3
  • sushy 3/14/2013 10:24:11 PM
be prepared to be dissponted. S4 is just S3 with large screen
  • smartphonesrock 3/14/2013 10:24:27 PM
What do you think other competitors will do to cut S4 sales? They probably need to do something fast given the success of the S3.
  • Chris Moss 3/14/2013 10:24:32 PM
id like to see an app for the s3 that just shows a black screen with a small clock and a small notifation like an envolope if you get a mesage or a missed call icon etc.
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:24:40 PM
No idea on release date, but I'd expect sooner rather than later.
