Samsung Galaxy event (live blog)

Samsung is widely expected to announce the Galaxy S4 at its Unpacked event in New York City. Join us live from Radio City Music Hall.

  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:34:20 PM
We're inside the Radio City Music Hall theater. They're expecting between 3 and 5K people in here. So far, WiFi is hanging on, but these are early times...

Used to be an Apple fan with iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4. Once the contract expired on my existing ATT iPhone 4, I jumped to Samsung Galaxy S3. I've really enjoyed this phone! I strongly hope that Samsung releases an update to 4.2 "with" the Premium Suite to the S3 phones in the US.

@Hmza Fahz: If you can live without LTE, Nexus 4 is a fantastic phone. CNET review:

The musical entertainment started with big band and moved onto show tunes and now we're at Les Mis...
  • 4=death 3/14/2013 10:35:10 PM
The iPhone was good until 4S. Are the Chinese right? Does 4 = death? Hope this is better than the Htc one. Like touhwiz better than sense but i can live with sense
  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:35:12 PM
And now back to big band. Swing, Swing, Swing, I believe.
  • charles.cooper 3/14/2013 10:35:38 PM
I want to see Roger Cheng breakdance in the aisles.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:35:46 PM
Funny moment: HTC was handing out potato chips before the show. Smart use of marketing dollars, and actually something I'd expect Samsung to do at an Apple event! (So there.)
  • Rhombus 3/14/2013 10:35:47 PM
    oh the humanity
  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:36:06 PM
Coop, let's start a petition. Roger tells me he thinks this is a GREAT idea...

See? Potato chips! I should also mention that it's moving on toward 7 now and Samsung isn't serving any food. This is a bad idea. Hungry journalists = snarky journalists.

  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:37:15 PM

  • 4=death 3/14/2013 10:37:47 PM
Nexus 4 is a good phone but lte is a big miss. I use my phone too much on lte to go back
  • Chander 3/14/2013 10:37:56 PM
Is Jessica Dolcurt updating through an iPhone or a Samsung Phone? xD
  • Roger Cheng 3/14/2013 10:37:59 PM
@charles.cooper: I'm actually an excellent dancer. You'd be blown away.
  • Waikwong 3/14/2013 10:38:22 PM
If the S4 is a Nexus LTE phone, I may consider leaving the iphone (I have both iphone 5 and S3), as for now, I use the iphone 5 so much more than the S3, its not even funny. Samsung should not be writing any software

I think it's awesome that the hype is for a company other than Apple.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:38:28 PM
C'mon, Roger. Gotta see it to believe it.
  • sarahtew 3/14/2013 10:38:30 PM

Jessica Dolcourt brought a much needed snack after our 2 hr wait in line...

  • MIke_Erie 3/14/2013 10:38:36 PM
Posting now cause I can't get though on the phone... I had an s3 but "downgraded" to the orig. Samsung Google Nexus becuause my s3 had so much blootware. Both from Verizon in the case and Samsung. Question is what do you all think about rooting your phones to get rid of the crapware?
  • kevinsalt 3/14/2013 10:38:48 PM
HTC Outside trying to help the hype victims to see the light :P)
  • joetrill 3/14/2013 10:38:53 PM
    octa core
  • LushSushy 3/14/2013 10:38:55 PM
I had samsung phone for a while and it keeps freezing and automatically shit down... Although this will never go away , Samsung should stop making big screen phones. What happens if you put it in your pocket this 5 inch phones.. not good
  • bravey00 3/14/2013 10:39:02 PM
Iphone 5 was not a big enough departure from what went before in terms of both design and technology. Thats why I now own an S3 which is about to become outdated. ..booo
  • Roger Cheng 3/14/2013 10:39:09 PM
So let's set the scene: We're a few rows away from the stage at Radio City Music Hall. Big band music is playing. The stage is flanked by two large displays, each displaying the Unpacked logo.
  • shivaslives 3/14/2013 10:39:44 PM
that's a big "if", john falcone. No LTE?
  • Scott G 3/14/2013 10:39:49 PM
Hopefully the S4 works better as a phone that the S3 did. After 6 months of frustration I threw in the towel and got a phone that works, a Motorla M

Okay, Jessica has alerted me that I am basically copying what she said. Apologies for the redundant posts. I'll to do better.
  • shivaslives 3/14/2013 10:40:00 PM
You're right, Maggie. I'm in line for the S4 already.
  • John Falcone 3/14/2013 10:40:09 PM
My opinion: As much as people say they want "innovative" phones, let's face facts: these are all gonna be large, touch-screen phones going forward. Innovation will be more about software, battery life, and performance.
  • Jimmy G 3/14/2013 10:40:19 PM
iPhone 5 is hands down the best phone. Look at what Apple has done with integration - Apple TV, iTunes, MAC, time capsule, etc. when you get a new iPhone plug into iTunes and you are up and running in 5 minutes. How about apple care? No android based phone can touch this level of integration.
  • kevinsalt 3/14/2013 10:40:25 PM
Incremental uprades re OK if you can afford to sell the hype ... #HTCOne is still the phone to bead even if HTC is a company in third place
  • Jessica Dolcourt 3/14/2013 10:40:43 PM
@ScottG Wow, sounds like a terrible experience. I've had 6 GS3s for a long time and they seem to work. They do spontaneously turn themselves on in my purse, though.
  • sarahtew 3/14/2013 10:41:01 PM

Samsung ushers with a "4" pin in these matching outfits are helping folks get seated in each aisle...

  • Roger Cheng 3/14/2013 10:41:38 PM
As Jessica mentioned, we were waiting in line for about two hours before the doors opened. With the New York chill going, it was not the most comfortable wait.
