Samsung IFA press conference

Samsung's Unpacked event at IFA promises new devices

  • Brian Bennett 8/29/2012 5:34:57 PM
The big news about the screen is its 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 5:35:03 PM
    3100mAh battery, noice
  • Brian Bennett 8/29/2012 5:35:34 PM
Yeah, when I saw it the Note 2 looked longer but still very thin.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 5:35:37 PM
3,100 mAh battery is a good start, but that's one thirsty screen--unless Samsung adds a lot of the aggressive power management of the GS3.
  • Matt 8/29/2012 5:35:44 PM
Is quad for LTE compatible for US?
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 5:36:29 PM
@Matt This hasn't been announced yet, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor seems to be the go-to for LTE right now in the U.S.
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 5:36:32 PM
Air View: gives you a small preview of things like e-mails, photos, and calendar events without having to open the content.
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 5:37:07 PM
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 5:37:23 PM
I'm always a little disappointed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on here is so very TouchWiz. I'm ready for a new look.
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 5:37:59 PM
Popup Note: Opens up an S Note on the Galaxy Note 2's screen when you pull out the S pen so you can quickly jot down notes while on a call, for example.
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 5:38:31 PM
I don't get it, I thought people enjoyed whipping out Sharpie's and writing on their palms while on the phone...
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 5:38:36 PM
  • Brian Bennett 8/29/2012 5:38:39 PM
@Matt Jessica is right. When I asked Samsung about Quad Core and LTE in the U.S., they smiled but kept silent.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 5:39:23 PM
I really like the idea of clipping with a lasso tool. I'm not sure when I'd use it, since I don't usually take notes that way, but then again, I'm on a laptop all day.
  • Vincent 8/29/2012 5:41:01 PM
Will the October release only be the unlocked version?
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 6:30:35 PM
I wonder what snacks they serve in Germany?
  • Alex Lee 8/29/2012 6:30:45 PM
Thanks for the live blog CNET! The video on Samsung's Facebook page was really lagging for me :)
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 6:30:45 PM
How many times did they say magic today?
  • aloysius.low 8/29/2012 6:30:50 PM
Thanks for having me, US guys. It's time for those of us still awake in Asia to catch some sleep. If you're tuning in from Asia, don't be late for work!

  • stephen.shankland 8/29/2012 6:31:12 PM
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 6:31:14 PM
@Alex: No problem, glad you enjoyed it!
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:31:29 PM
We'll spend a few more minutes here answering questions, but stay tuned for more in-depth coverage from IFA, where Stephen Shankland valiantly covers the show.
  • stephen.shankland 8/29/2012 6:31:42 PM
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 6:32:13 PM
Oh, that James Franco commercial is on the live stream.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:32:30 PM
So to sum it up, we don't have release dates or pricing for any of the products Samsung just announced. And both Samsung Galaxy devices will have Android 41. Jelly Bean.
  • stephen.shankland 8/29/2012 6:32:49 PM
Kent: Snacks? No snacks. Just booze at Samsung. There's a lot more whine than wine, though, because the network here was crushed!
  • Stephen Shankland 8/29/2012 6:33:08 PM

Samsung attracted a huge press scrum at IFA.

  • Yahoo Wizard 8/29/2012 6:33:25 PM
Did I miss it or did they announce the Galaxy Note 10.1 today?
  • stephen.shankland 8/29/2012 6:33:43 PM

All the Windows fun from Samsung at IFA.

  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 6:34:13 PM
I like the Zac Posen commercial more than the James Franco one
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 6:34:14 PM
    Shankland: Sorry to hear that.
Grab a nice glass of Reisling.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:34:29 PM
@Yahoo Wizard Samsung launched the Note 10.1 globally. Here's CNET's review.
  • Lynn La 8/29/2012 6:35:19 PM
Only because it somehow managed not to include girls having a pillow fight on a bed. It's difficult, I know.
  • Kent German 8/29/2012 6:35:48 PM
Everyone: Yes, the S3 devices will get Jelly Bean "soon"
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:36:41 PM
@Ankit Chahal Software determines device compatibility. This is a key differentiator between the GS3 and the Galaxy Note series.
  • Urvesh 8/29/2012 6:36:53 PM
Sry to add this discusion nw..bt should I buy galaxy nexus or galaxy note
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:37:34 PM
@Urvesh Between the two, I'd probably buy the Galaxy Note...unless you really value the pure Android 4.1 Jelly Bean experience. We haven't seen yet how TouchWiz handles that.
  • Nikhil 8/29/2012 6:38:24 PM
jelly bean for old note ?
  • Brian Bennett 8/29/2012 6:38:50 PM
@Uresh I agree since the Note 2 has much better specs as well.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:39:01 PM
@Nikhil In the U.S., we've got Ice Cream Sandwich, but the Note 2 is the first Jelly Bean device that isn't the Galaxy Nexus.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:40:01 PM
Ok, everyone. Thank you for joining us today. CNET will have a more coverage and analysis to come, so stay tuned! And, of course, follow @stshankland for more news on the ground in Berlin.
  • Jessica Dolcourt 8/29/2012 6:40:50 PM
Also, we'd love to have you with us next week, Sept. 5, for TWO mobile events, a Motorola/Verizon press conference and a Microsoft/Nokia event. See you there!
