T-Mobile's Uncarrier 7.0 event

T-Mobile advances its Uncarrier campaign with yet another incentive to lure customers in.

  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:51:49 PM
Welcome everyone. It's Roger Cheng, executive editor for CNET News, here at the T-Mobile Uncarrier 7.0 event.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:52:20 PM
We're in the basement of a local San Francisco bar, Local Edition, which T-Mobile has re-purposed as a venue for this event.
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 7:52:44 PM
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:52:58 PM
As you can image, the area is awash in pink and purple lights. There's a large screen playing a video of someone spray-painting a wall...very akin to its rebellious reputation.
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 7:55:08 PM
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:55:44 PM
So T-Mobile is drafting behind yesterday's Apple event, so there's a lot of the same press here today.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:56:17 PM
They didn't, like me, fly into in SF this morning to attend this event.
  • Lynn La 9/10/2014 7:56:28 PM
Hello everybody, we're all getting settled into the area.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:56:41 PM
To say I'm a little tired would be an understatement.
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 7:56:43 PM
  • Lynn La 9/10/2014 7:57:15 PM
Though, Roger is doing his absolute best keeping it together. Grade-A champ.
  • Lynn La 9/10/2014 7:57:24 PM
The loud rock music might not be helping though.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 7:57:33 PM
    Haha, thanks Lynn!
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 7:58:36 PM
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 7:59:52 PM
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:00:05 PM
Ah, cue the T-Mobile store employees brought into pump up the volume, not that you need it with the blaring rock music.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:00:53 PM
Okay, so what's the over-under on how many times T-Mobile CEO John Legere drops an F bomb? I feel like he's toned things down a bit over time.
  • Lynn La 9/10/2014 8:01:36 PM
I think we should post a super-cut video of all the times Legere curses for this event.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:01:50 PM
So it's under Legere that T-Mobile has flourished with a resurgence in subscriber growth. That's thanks to a savvy combination of good promotional plans and a brash campaign led by Legere himself.
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 8:01:55 PM
  • Lynn La 9/10/2014 8:01:58 PM
All right, there is a wave of woo-hoos from the audience to the left. Something is happening.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:02:04 PM
The guy isn't afraid to publicly bash his competitors, and it's worked well for him.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:02:32 PM
Legere has tapped into our collective frustration with carriers, which is something anyone of us can identify with at some point in our lives.
  • Vizzy285 9/10/2014 8:02:41 PM
    IPhone 7 already? Lol
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:02:47 PM
    @Vizzy285: Haha I'd wish!
  • Shermenti 9/10/2014 8:02:50 PM
Get the "swear word" counter ready guys!
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 8:03:22 PM

    The Bar

  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:03:30 PM
So the event is supposed to start up at 1 pm PT, but I guess we're running late.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:04:09 PM
So the media is packed into the middle section of this venue, flanked by rows of T-Mo employees on each side. These guys get really hyped up for Legere.
  • Jason Maggard 9/10/2014 8:04:31 PM
What would everyone most like to hear? Unlimited data? Cloud Storage? New phones?
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 8:04:39 PM
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:05:10 PM
Just to review, T-Mobile's original Uncarrier eliminated contracts, while Uncarrier 2.0 introduced the Jump early upgrade program. Both were gamechangers that got the other carriers to introduce similar programs.
  • Vase Odin 9/10/2014 8:05:13 PM
How big is this wall the guy is painting?
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:05:25 PM
    @VaseOdin: It's actually just a video. But it's a pretty big wall!
  • Jason Maggard 9/10/2014 8:05:29 PM
Legre is being brought in by the T-Mobile network, so he's a little slow.
  • SAMOzeal7 9/10/2014 8:05:34 PM
I'm 100% more pumped for this than I was for Apples Event yesterday...

...though yesterday was a lot better than I had expected.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:06:06 PM
Uncarrier 3.0 offered unlimited data and text messages overseas, while Uncarrier 4.0 bought out your family's ETFs.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:06:44 PM
Uncarrier 5.0, just earlier this summer, was the introduction of the free Test Drive program with a week-long trial with an iPhone 5S, while Uncarrier 6.0 was data-free music.
  • imronburgundy 9/10/2014 8:06:52 PM
I wonder if this graffiti artist's hand is cramping up from continually tagging this wall...
  • mrana 9/10/2014 8:06:58 PM
Does iphone 5S will also support wifi Calling or just new iphones. please some one ask to JL
  • Cory L 9/10/2014 8:07:03 PM
I hope they introduce an iPhone 6 kind of promotion.. got an s5 when it came out.. now im finding myself wanting to switch back to iphone.. only for the iPhone 6 plus though
  • Josh Miller 9/10/2014 8:07:08 PM

    T-Mobile spray paint

  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:07:31 PM
The other wireless carriers are already offering iPhone promotions. Verizon will give you a free iPhone 6 (16GB) if you trade in your old one and sign a new contract.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:07:48 PM
Sprint is offering a $50 plan specifically for the iPhone. That's $10 cheaper than its lowest plan.
  • Roger Cheng 9/10/2014 8:08:10 PM
Okay, Legere is in the back of the venue, waiting to make his introduction.
