2019. Another year, no watch face store

I can't stand the "sports band" or whatever they call that rubbery thing you tuck under. But the other bands are insanely expensive -- I got a $12 one from Amazon -- magnetic loop version, and so far it's great.

Now time to talk about iOS, Cook says. Last year, we got iOS 12, with faster performance, Memoji, screen time, etc.

It had 97% customer satisfaction. And adoption rate is large -- 85% of iOS customers are on latest release. And iOS 12 has been installed on more systems than ever.

Cook mentions that Android 9, by comparison, just has 10% adoption.

(Cook has been throwing shade at Android for several years now -- and the adoption data is easy to hit on)

It is iOS 13 time. Hair Force One is on stage, looking sharp

Fragmentation is a particular pet peeve of mine. That's why Apple wins in so many of these key categories. It's not just a usability and features issue, it's a security issue.

Craig Federighi (who has sometimes gone by "Hair Force One") announces iOS 13.

iOS 13: Apple boldly stands in the face of unlucky numbers
  • Ian Sherr 6/3/2019 5:29:37 PM
Unlock with Face ID is 30% faster now with iOS 13, Federighi says.

Faster Face ID, which is helpful.

App updates smaller? My cell bill thanks you
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:30:20 PM
Faster app launch excites me less
  • Ian Sherr 6/3/2019 5:30:22 PM
Also, App Store downloads will be 50% smaller, and updates will be 60% smaller. (I wonder if Facebook's blue app will measure up)

Also, launch speed is 2x faster. Lots of cheers there.

We are undersea in jellyfish land. Dark Mode
  • Ian Sherr 6/3/2019 5:31:09 PM
And a new feature -- which we get a video for. Neon jellyfish in a dark background. Can you guess?
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:31:23 PM
Dark Mode produces tons of cheers.
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:31:31 PM
    And one squeal
  • Ian Sherr 6/3/2019 5:31:37 PM
iOS 13 will have a dark mode. Federighi decides to demo it. Someone screams in excitement. "All right!" Federighi responds.
  • James Martin 6/3/2019 5:31:53 PM
  • dan.ackerman 6/3/2019 5:31:54 PM
And let's not forget that dark mode can have potential positive battery life implications for OLED displays.
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:31:57 PM
My watch has been in Dark Mode for years

Federighi: "Your daily events never looked so awesome."

I have a feeling he's being a little sarcastic about how life-changing dark mode is.

Oh, but he also announces the keyboard has a swipe-typing feature.
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:32:55 PM
Swiping comes to the built in keyboard now, btw
  • James Martin 6/3/2019 5:32:58 PM
  • James Martin 6/3/2019 5:33:04 PM
  • dan.ackerman 6/3/2019 5:33:11 PM
Ah, Apple-official swipe typing. This is actually the best thing at the show, for real.
  • James Martin 6/3/2019 5:33:18 PM
  • dan.ackerman 6/3/2019 5:33:43 PM
I can't handle any kind of phone non-swipe typing, tapping letter by letter is incomprehensible to me.

Federighi says iOS 13 will also have sharing suggestions in the new share sheet, based on who you typically share with. And of course, the music app will have time-synced lyrics.
  • Scott Stein 6/3/2019 5:34:00 PM
I’ve been reading in Dark Mode on Kindle, I prefer it. Many apps have Dark Mode already. (Will iOS 13 shift to it automatically at night?)
