Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:07:10 PMThis year, he says "today, we're doing more on our iPhones than ever before" -- and introduces that the company's adding features like widgets, picture-in-picture and other things to allow you to easily do more with the phone at once.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:07:34 PMPut another way, would you want a MacBook that ran Windows, or something like a killer Windows gaming laptop that ran MacOS?
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:08:03 PMThere's a new feature called App Library that basically creates folders for your iPhone automatically. "I've lost track where a lot of things are" Federighi said
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:08:09 PMPersonally, I hate folders, I never remember what's in them. and any attempt at organizing fall apart because I forget where I put things.
-
Sarah Tew 6/22/2020 5:08:19 PM
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:08:38 PMApple's also going to allow you to hide app pages, and instead get to the "App Library" so you can search the apps or see them in predetermined folders.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:09:16 PMI do like front-loading recently used apps -- I use that pull-down-from-the-middle-of-the-screen move for that.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:09:17 PMHe also notes that apps you use most will automatically be at the front of each folder. (Smart)
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:10:02 PMNext up is widgets. Federighi says he was inspired by Apple Watch -- bringing a lot of the look and feel over to the iPhone, but of course a little different too. "The new designs are more data rich than ever." They also come in a variety of sizes.
-
Sarah Tew 6/22/2020 5:10:17 PM
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:10:37 PMOh, that's nice. Big widgets on your phone menu screen.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:10:53 PMBTW, the number of words said per minute here are insane. The natural slow and methodical sound, and the clapping that slow down the announcements, aren't here. Federighi is just blowing through. If you don't know what he's talking about, I imagine you fall behind kinda quickly.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:11:04 PMDoes that mean I can finally see the actual weather without clicking on the app?
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:11:22 PMTo be fair, he is talking in a mostly normal cadence. It's just faster than I'm used to hearing on stage.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:11:31 PMOk, next up, picture-in-picture.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:11:49 PMPlus, Ian, not doing this live, we're not going to get any of those unexpected moments, where things don't work right, something is inadvertently revealed, etc.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:12:01 PMThis is probably the smartest and easiest win -- PiP was in the iPad (though it's dependent on various apps to work -- some don't support).
-
Sarah Tew 6/22/2020 5:12:06 PM
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:12:09 PMThose little human moments. We're basically in full-on Apple Bot mode here.
-
Sarah Tew 6/22/2020 5:12:10 PM
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:12:43 PM(Dan, absolutely, although I bet they'll have jokes built in anyway. At least I hope so -- I like the personality we get every once in a while. They don't do it too much to make it seem cheezy -- it's a wink and nod to how we're all nerds and in on the joke).

-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:13:05 PMFrankly, those as all pretty great updates. More useful-sounding than anything from the last iOS version.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:13:20 PMNext up -- new ways to not use Siri! ;)
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:13:33 PMOk, Siri now getting an update. This year, "we've completely redesigned the Siri experience" -- which is to say, it doesn't take over the whole screen, it just brings up a bubble at the bottom of your screen and doesn't take over
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:13:39 PMKidding -- I actually just, at the age of 40-something -- bought my first car.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:13:57 PMAnd I'm all-in on Car Play now, and using Siri for lots of car stuff.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:14:09 PMNext up: Yael Garten. Director of Siri Data Science & Engineering.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:14:38 PMShe's talking about Siri -- and how the company is using internet search technology to learn info and tell you. So like "when do seasons start?"
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:14:55 PMI can only imagine what this is going to be like when 4chan gets a hold of it (sigh).
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:15:24 PMAudio messages, audio tweets -- is this the year of audio communication? I suppose it makes sense, as we have zero face-to-face convos now.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:15:30 PMSiri will also have translation -- live translation feature that's private and works completely offline.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:15:48 PMEnglish, Mandarin, French, German, Spanish and more.
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:16:05 PMOh, new translation app -- that's something Android has really been ahead of the curve on, compared with iOS.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:16:25 PM"Translate will make communicating between languages easier than ever before"
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:16:44 PMNo Klingon? C'mon Apple!
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:17:02 PMI wonder how much Siri is going to be stored on the phone. Google did this last year with Google Assistant and it did indeed speed it up.
-
Sarah Tew 6/22/2020 5:17:16 PM
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:17:33 PMTrue point about messages threads getting buried under new junk.
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:17:39 PMNext up: Messages. Of course this means more Memoji
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:17:50 PMOk, so pin key ones to the top -- simple enough. Why did it take so long?
-
Ian Sherr 6/22/2020 5:17:57 PM20 new hair and headwear (including cook's hats) and face coverings
-
dan.ackerman 6/22/2020 5:18:15 PMHi, can I get more giant beard Mimojis? Am I spelling that right?
