    Still pretty sparse.

By 2008, had ramped up 3D models. Showing Coit Tower, etc., on better terrain.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:12:07 PM
Problem: Imagery from multiple sources, inconsistent, doesn't look right. And unmodeled buildings "break the illusion."

"We wanted to do something better."
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:12:32 PM
What could they do at scale to model world in 3D?
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:12:52 PM
"What we're doing is using automated technology to extract 3D from aerial images."
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:13:01 PM
Tech just now getting good enough for this.
  • Josh Lowensohn 6/6/2012 5:13:10 PM
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:13:20 PM
It starts with planes, equipped with own hardware, taking oblique imagery.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:13:42 PM
    Planes fly in tight patterns,

Then they use stereophotogrammetry to reconstruct full 3D data of a city.

    Oooh stereophotogrammetry. I see.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:14:46 PM
Then, for each pixel on the model, to find the best color for it, they use the imagery. The generate textured 3D mesh for each building.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:14:50 PM
    But we're still not done
  • Josh Lowensohn 6/6/2012 5:15:03 PM
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:15:07 PM
Then they have to package it up for efficient storage, serving, transmission.

DEMO of full 3D maps coming up
  • James Jones 6/6/2012 5:15:27 PM
And when will they launch the Google drones?
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:15:33 PM
    Indeed.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:15:55 PM
Demo: Aerial image of SF City hall. Showing full Matrix-like 3D rotation

Surrounding buildings, trees all modeled too.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:16:19 PM
    Flying over city now.
  • Josh Lowensohn 6/6/2012 5:16:23 PM
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:16:24 PM
    Every building completely modeled.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:16:25 PM
    Wow
  • Josh Lowensohn 6/6/2012 5:16:28 PM
  • jaymar.cabebe 6/6/2012 5:16:30 PM
Are we demoing on an iPad right now? Interesting.
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:16:44 PM
"We're trying to create magic here. Almost as if you're in your own personal helicopter."
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:16:55 PM
    This is really cool.
  • Josh Lowensohn 6/6/2012 5:17:03 PM
  • Rafe 6/6/2012 5:17:04 PM
    Demo is on iPad BTW
