I have a feeling you wouldn't be able to switch OS's on the fly, but I'm sure that will be the ROM modders'
    first priority. :-)
  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:08:59 PM
And we're in! The CNET crew is here at the venue in Manhattan. CNET Reviews editor Dan Graziano is next to me. And CNET photographer Sarah Tew is ready to snap some photos. We are just waiting for things to get started.
  • Anthony 8/19/2014 2:09:15 PM
Rob: Microsoft opened up the software to third parties for fraction of the cost to free, they need more phones as it has gotten stale and limited with only Nokia, this could be part of a hardware push and it's cheap for HTC to do because they have the hardware in place.
  • Derilyct 8/19/2014 2:09:24 PM
I was planning to upgrade today to WP planning to get a Nokia Icon. But if I can get a better camera and the rumors are true I am interested in the M8.
  • Ray 8/19/2014 2:09:48 PM
HTC's Jeff Gordon sent out a tweet that they will be releasing a smartphone today. More than likely it's the W8 and they wouldn't release a Nexus tablet. That's Googles job.
  • nokialumia625user 8/19/2014 2:09:52 PM
I'd like to see a HTC smart watch. Would be quite a disappointment if there's no word on it today.

Dan Graziano and Maggie Reardon, ready for action...

  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:11:09 PM
We're in a pretty swanky, but intimate event space here. Roughly 40 or so chairs for attendees. Seats are starting to fill but it's by no means crowded yet. Not sure if that's a function of it being August in New York City or the fact that HTC may be announcing more of a niche product today.
  • Ray 8/19/2014 2:11:41 PM
Done, W8 or Windows M8 (same thing), no smartwatch today, September is the month of the smartwatch with the Moto 360, possible round faced Samsung smartwatch and the iWatch.
  • Dan Graziano 8/19/2014 2:12:15 PM
Don't expect any sort of Nexus or Google product here. This event is all about Microsoft.
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:12:25 PM
As Ray points out -- Motorola has scheduled a press event in Chicago on Sept 4, which is widely thought to be the coming-out party for the Moto 360. www.cnet.com
  • Sergio 8/19/2014 2:12:38 PM
That screen shows a windows logo .... It will be. M8 for windows, I was hoping for nexus
  • Rohit Singh 8/19/2014 2:13:02 PM
im waiting for IFA in september. There will be great gadgets by htc
  • sarahtew 8/19/2014 2:13:11 PM

Looks like the VIPs have been having breakfast upstairs.

  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:13:15 PM
There's some Microsoft and Verizon signage around the room, so no doubt that the rumors about this device being a Windows Phone handset and being available on Verizon Wireless are true.
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:13:42 PM
We're going to have LOTS of IFA coverage in a couple of weeks, including live coverage of the Samsung Unpacked press conference on Sept 3.
  • KarimKassab 8/19/2014 2:13:51 PM
Can anyone tell me all the events in august and september because there's a lot and I'm pretty lost
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:14:14 PM
As I mentioned, there are a LOT of events coming up:
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:14:32 PM
    >> Barnes & Noble (tomorrow)
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:15:05 PM
    >> IFA [week of Sept 1]
  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:15:11 PM
This will be the first Microsoft Windows Phone that HTC has introduced since 2012. If the rumors pan out and it's really the same hardware as the flagship M8 it could be one of the more interesting Windows Phones to be introduced.
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:15:24 PM
    >> Samsung Unpacked [Galaxy Note 4 and other devices rumored] on Sept 3
  • Dan Graziano 8/19/2014 2:15:52 PM
Oddly enough, there is an Xbox One directly in front of us.
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:15:52 PM
    >> A Microsoft presser at IFA on Sept 4, plus the Chicago Moto event mentioned earlier
  • sarahtew 8/19/2014 2:16:11 PM

Front row-mates to my left: Dan Graziano, our how-to guru, and Maggie Reardon, newswoman extraordinairre.

  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:16:11 PM
    >> And, of course, the rumored iPhone 6 unveiling on Sept. 9
  • MSFT_guru 8/19/2014 2:16:26 PM
The HTC One M8 doesn't have a camera that even comes close to the Lumia Icon; therefore I don't see much of a reason to favor this over the Icon. Unless you like the dot view case and IR to control your tv.
  • Nasir 8/19/2014 2:16:43 PM
    Karim,
Sept 3rd: Samsung unpacked event (Note 4)
Sept 4th: Motorola event in Chicago. (Moto X+1, G, &360)
    Sept 9th: Apple iPhone release.
  • Rohit Singh 8/19/2014 2:16:54 PM
my question is who will be introducing the phone today...will it be peter chou?
  • nokialumia625user 8/19/2014 2:17:01 PM
An exciting few weeks for technology!
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:17:21 PM
We could use an exciting few weeks -- this summer has been quite boring, from a tech perspective.
  • TD 8/19/2014 2:17:30 PM
When will the Win 8 be avail @ Verizion?
  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:18:55 PM
Windows Phone market share is tiny compared to Apple's iOS and Google's Android. And unfortunately for Microsoft it's been slipping. According to recent data from IDC, WP shipments have been falling. And for Q2 market share dropped from 3.4 percent to 2.5 percent year-over-year.
  • sarahtew 8/19/2014 2:19:13 PM

    There's always at least one.

  • Dan Graziano 8/19/2014 2:19:37 PM
The music has died down. We could be getting ready to start.
  • nokialumia625user 8/19/2014 2:19:57 PM
If this W8 is Verizon-only, I would be quite disappointed. Want this phone for my next contact, but I'm not in the States.
  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:20:08 PM
But maybe a flagship phone from HTC will help revive things. There's no doubt that Apple and Samsung dominate the smartphone market, but HTC One M8 has been popular.

Things are getting started here as we get our first Jason Mackenzie, president of HTC America, and he is joined by two execs. One from Verizon and one from Microsoft.
  • rom 8/19/2014 2:21:50 PM
Verizon Wireless shows off HTC One M8 for Windows in new video - www.youtube.com
  • John Falcone 8/19/2014 2:22:15 PM
[OK, folks -- I'm gonna stop putting reader comments through now that the event has started.]
  • Marguerite Reardon 8/19/2014 2:22:34 PM
Mackenzie is giving us an introduction of the HTC One M8. And he is now rolling a video that is showing off the aluminum flagship device introduced earlier this year.
