Sony is investing in a fast gaming network, Perry says.
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:40:03 PM
But, do people really want to play old games, outside of maybe a handful of ones with novelty value? I ask this as someone currently playing System Shock 2 again...
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:40:11 PM
Sony will be rolling out PlayStation cloud services in phases, and Perry says he can't talk about it.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:40:16 PM
  • Jeff Bakalar 2/20/2013 11:40:16 PM
They're definitely hinting at Gaikai-powered backwards compatibility, but nothing's official yet.
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:40:38 PM
Sony will try to fill out its catalog through this cloud tech. But will players have to buy their old games back in online mode?
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:40:39 PM
Saying that the PS4 cloud servies will be rolled out over time just means most of the good stuff won't be available at launch. That's the same thing that tripped up the Wii U, right?
  • Jeff Bakalar 2/20/2013 11:41:24 PM
Yeah, all that speak is safety net stuff
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:41:34 PM
"This system just works." "Magical." Yep, those tech buzzwords can't help but to get around.
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:41:54 PM
We're watching another promo video about the developer feedback toward the creation of the system.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:42:29 PM
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:42:50 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:43:05 PM
On immediacy, Sony wants to remove the barrier between the system and your need to play games.
  • Jeff Bakalar 2/20/2013 11:43:09 PM
Really like how they're talking up speed, speed, speed. Anyone with a PS3 knows what it's like to wait and wait and wait.
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:43:52 PM
Historically, games used to live in a tower. You play your game, then go back to the real world. Sony wants that game to follow you through your life.
  • Jeff Bakalar 2/20/2013 11:44:09 PM
Philosophically, Sony is nailing it. Casual and mobile gaming is super fast. Eliminating some of the annoying console lag blurs the line a bit.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:44:30 PM
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:44:48 PM
I will say, between boot up time, logging into your profile, loading a game, then loading a save, deciding to start playing a game on current consoles is really not an impulse decision -- the PS4 promises instant gratification, and that could be a major win.
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:44:52 PM
@JeffBakalar: I'm curious to see what the execution is like.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:44:53 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:45:20 PM
They're still running through interviews with a lot of developers talking about what a great platform Playstation is.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:45:52 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:46:08 PM
Sony Worldwide Studio's Michael Denny is now on stage.
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:46:28 PM
Denny lays out the ambiguous hype thick, talking about new experiences, synergy between hardware and software, and "unlocking the canvas of new creativity."

Guerrilla Games exec is on stage to talk about a new game.
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:47:50 PM
And... we're starting with sci-fi shooters...been there, done that....
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:47:52 PM
Exclusive game time -- here's where the sales pitch really starts.
  • dan.ackerman 2/20/2013 11:48:07 PM
Oh seriously, is this a Killzone game? Talk about leading with the B-team...
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:48:20 PM
    Now for Kill Zone: Shadowfall.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:48:39 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:48:40 PM
Well, the game certainly looks spectacular.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:48:54 PM
  • Jeff Bakalar 2/20/2013 11:48:55 PM
Is this the part where we see another Killzone video that overpromises on visuals? Deja vu!
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:49:43 PM
The visuals are slick, but will this be what we actually end up seeing?
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:50:05 PM
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:50:22 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:50:49 PM
The main player is walking through this beautifully rendered city, when a massive explosion erupts.
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:50:54 PM
  • sarahtew 2/20/2013 11:51:12 PM
  • Roger Cheng 2/20/2013 11:51:22 PM
The player wakes up in a daze to see the aftermath of the explosion. Again, the visuals are great.
