T-Mobile Uncarrier press conference

T-Mobile is expected to talk more about its new no-contract plans and provide an update on its 4G LTE plans.

Let me set the scene: We're in a gallery space on the west side of Manhattan. The presentation room is surrounded by three large screens.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:17:56 PM
On display are images of old telecom equipment, pipes, rotating gears, and statements like "Expensive" and "Ripped-Off."
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:18:05 PM
I guess you can figure out what we'll be talking about today.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:19:00 PM
    OK, I'm in everyone!
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:19:25 PM
The space is actually fairly small. There are about 48 small cube cushions for us to sit on. Behind that are about a dozen tables. The frazzled and frozen journalists are all busy warming up and setting up.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:20:07 PM
Sitting here listening to phone static and random buzzes. Odd for a carrier to begin a presser this way!
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:20:10 PM
In the front is a pink circular stand. Two white boxes stand in front covering the HDTV displays that will undoubtedly show the script for the executives.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:20:47 PM
Before getting into this dark, confined room, we had to walk through a little zig-zag filled with displays of service contracts and images of the old restrictive carriers.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:21:26 PM
Toward the end, you pass through a metal detector, and the display in front says your upgrade is denied (but they'll still show you a Windows Phone as a consolation). A random shot at Windows Phone.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:21:40 PM
Signs on the walls, projected on screens really, filled with sputtering
sparks and failing network hardware. Again this is crazy!
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:21:46 PM
Stay tuned for pictures. Our photographer, Lori Grunin, is still booting up.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:22:30 PM
There's lot of ambient noise broadcast through the PA -- lots of static, random voices...it's all atmospheric in a creepy sort of way.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:22:38 PM
At least it's different than the standard carrier event!
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:22:52 PM
Just to let you guys know, it's really dark in here...
  • John Falcone 3/26/2013 3:23:28 PM
Analyst Ross Rubin is calling the set design "post apocalyptic": twitter.com
  • Wesam 3/26/2013 3:23:34 PM
It's a trap! Run for your life! LOL
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:23:48 PM
@Wesam: It kind of feels that way! I"m sure it'll brighten up once the show starts.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:24:08 PM
Okay, so we're about 10 minutes late so far. No signs that this will be starting up soon. Stay tuned.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:24:28 PM
TMO is really going to have to sell these new plans since describing cell phone pricing is always tricky.
  • Lori Grunin 3/26/2013 3:24:37 PM

T-Mobile's opinion about our current choices

  • John Falcone 3/26/2013 3:25:19 PM
    Yikes. Post-apocalyptic, indeed.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:25:30 PM
I think in a post apocalyptic world, I'd opt for a sat phone and live at sea.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:26:07 PM
Maybe they're saying that in a post-apocalyptic world, only T-Mobile will survive.
  • Jesus Rosales 3/26/2013 3:26:24 PM
Is there any way I can see the T-Mobile show live please help
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:26:45 PM
Maybe that's why the event is running late...need to fire up a few generators.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:26:46 PM
@JesusRosales: I'm sorry, I don't believe there's a public live stream. Keep following us for all the live updates!
  • Lori Grunin 3/26/2013 3:27:39 PM

    Yes, we are.

  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:27:42 PM
It's a small event space so things are filling up pretty quickly.
  • Brian Bennett 3/26/2013 3:28:04 PM
Hey are those two beat up phone booths over there? I remember those!
  • Javier 3/26/2013 3:28:05 PM
like Taco Bell in Demolition Man
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:28:19 PM
@Javier: Love that movie. And yes, the analogy is appropriate.
  • JoeStix1x 3/26/2013 3:28:31 PM
@RogerCheng Why no love for Windows Phone?
  • Jose 3/26/2013 3:28:54 PM
I currently have the $70 unlimited plan with the nexus 7 and couldnt be happier. I wish I could get LTE though, haha.
  • Roger Cheng 3/26/2013 3:28:56 PM
@JoeStix1x: No idea. I thought that was a weird shot to take by T-Mobile. I mean, T-Mobile sells Windows Phones too!
  • Ziich 3/26/2013 3:29:11 PM
